Question removing wiring

I'm redoing my bathroom and have removed some wall mounted lanterns.I wont be replacing them and wonder what to do with the wires that are sticking out of the wall.I have put wire nuts on the exposed wires and wrapped them in electrical tape. There is also a switch that runs the lanterns I wont be using again. Can I just push the wires in the wall and patch the spot with sheetrock ?

One thing you definitely cannot do is simply push the wires back into the wall and patch the drywall. Here are some acceptable choices:
  • Disconnect the wires at the other end of these wires, such that you are absolutely sure that they are disconnected at both ends. Then you can push both ends back into the wall such that both ends are inaccessible. Note that to cover up both the light holes and the switch hole, you will not only need to disconnect both ends of the wire between them, but also both ends of the cable supplying the power.
  • You may put a junction box in the wall to contain the ends of these wires, and then put a blank cover on this box, and ensure that the box remains permanently accessible.
I would expect that you would prefer the first of these alternatives.
