I am replacing old receptacles with new and
have 4 wires,(red,black,white,ground)please
advise what to do with the red wire.
Why does only half the receptacle work when
the red wire is attatched?
What is the tab for on the hot side of the
receptacle? Is it meant to be broken?
I am from downunder not used to 110V.
Thanks
Terry

Usually when you have four wires the red wire is controlled by a switch in that room. Try the black wire on the bottom and the red wire on top with the white wire on the other side. Break the tab. This will allow half of the plug to be hot all the time and the half with the red wire connected to be controlled by the switch.

hello terrysmith,
the tab on the hot side of a recep is ment 2 be broken only if u want each outlet to be controled indavidualy, like top from a switch and bottom full time hot, this is the most common reasion. in your situation id have to agree with kcochran that the red is controlled by a switch, hook your receps up as he stated and i believe u will be in busines.

Question

Thanks for the info.
I still have a dilema. I would like the
entire outlet to be (hot) at all times. Can
I remove the red wire completely using a
wire nut? Can I attatch the red wire and
not break the tab? I don't seem to have an
available switch in the room.
Thanks
Terry

hello terrysmith,
ok with no switch this brings up another possability they may have split wired the receps 4 some odd reasion, u need to test the wires to c if this is what has taken place. get your self a voltage tester place it across the red and the white if u get a reading of 120 then its a hot then do the same for the black if u get 120 again then it is also hot. if this is the case break the tab on the gold side of the recep put the red on 1 screw and the black on the other ,put the white on the silver screw DO NOT BREAK THE TAB.
