I would like to run 220v electrical service from the main house panel underground to my garage. What size and type of wire would be recommended?

hello service,
from your info id put nothing less than a 100 amp 20 space sub panel in this will supply u with enough for what u r adding now and still leave u room 4 future. the 100 amp will require a 100 amp 2 pole breaker installled in existing panel with #3 thhn used 4 the 2 hots and nutural and a #6 for the ground. this is if u r useing conduit. if u plain on useing SE cabel u will need to drive a ground rod at the sub and ground it useing #6. heres a money saveing tip check with your local building authority and c if they will allow u to use #4 thhn on a 100 amp sub here it is allowed in a residance. if u need any more help feel free to post or e-mail me.
