outdoor light

I have a question about a light switch, thats inside of my home and i have a porch light thats outside of my house.how do i go about finding out if the switch works the light or not.i started with a new light, just to make sure that wasnt the problem.i have never seen the light on the porch work.it is a older house.thanks for any help i can get on this.

p.s
i took the light down and i took off the light switch cover, and in the light switch box there is new wire and in the porch light box there is real old wire.any tips on this would help.thanks for any help.

You can test with a multimeter for voltage (with the power on and the light fixture removed) or resistance (with the power off and the wires disconnected at both ends). Consider also that some porch lights are also on an electric eye, so look around for one of those.

If you have a switch just inside the door and a light just outside it, it's a good bet that the switch is supposed to work the light.
