replacing lanterns on outside of house

in replacing lanterns on outside of house what is the proper procedure? There are no visible screws, just a nut.Does this hold the lantern onto the wall fixture? Do all size lanterns fit to a standard connection? I currently have brass lanterns that are showing their age and would like to replace them.

Cool

The nut is on a threaded rod that is screwed into a crosspiece on the junction box.
You can get lanterns that are mounted like that or with two screws that screw to the jbox, if it is positioned properly.
Cut off the breaker to the lanterns, remove the old lanterns, and install the new ones. Just follow the directions that come with them.
Black hot wire to black, white neutral to white, bare ground wire to bare or green.
Twist the wires together by color, and wirenut them.
Good luck!
Mike
