Ceiling light/no junction box

Ceiling light/no junction box
Builder did not put junctions boxes in ceiling of first floor(two story house: 10 years old). Electrical wiring comes through small hole in ceiling and attached to existing light wiring. Light mounting is screwed into ceiling stud right next to the wiring. Can I use this set up or do I need to have someone install junction box in the ceiling.

Depends on the type of fixture. Some fixtures are designed for wiring connections within the fixture (e.g., fluorescent light fixtures and many bathroom light fixtures). If you don't have such a fixture, you'll need the box.
