First Thanks for the responses. I must say this is one of the few places on the net where I have actually gotten useful responses.

Now my ?: I installed a dimmer switch (9 -40 watt bulb chandelier)and now it hums loud enough to be heard if the house is quiet. Is this normal? ( I guess by now you can tell I know nothing about this stuff!)

Hi Dim,
No, this is not normal. You are pulling only three amps (360 watts) which is half of the capacity of normal dimmers.
My guess, unless there is some aspect not known here, you have a faulty dimmer.

I agree with David, it could be a defective dimmer. Also try a better brand. I have had brands that hummed but when I switched to a more expensive one, I didn't have any problems.

hello dim,
i have to agree with both david and bink, this is defentely not normal and sounds like a bad dimmer, i 2 have had problems with the elchepo dimmers humming.

i HAVE THREE ROOMS IN MY BASEMENT, AND ONE BATHROOM, THAT I AM IN THE PROCESS OF FINISHING. I ONLY HAVE ONE AVAILABLE SLOT IN MY PANEL. HOW CAN I ACCOMPLISH THIS JOB WITHOUT ADDING A PANEL ? WHAT IS THE MAXIMIUM LOAD I CAN PUT ON A SINGLE CIRCUIT? HOW MANY OUTLETS ARE REQUIRED PER WALL, AND CAN I POSSIBLY TIE IN TO EXISTING CIRCUITS AND ADD ADDITIONAL OUTLETS? Recessed Ceiling Light

I have a 2' X 2' 2-lamp recessed fluorescent ceiling light in the kitchen. I need to change the 2 U-shaped fluorescent lights. I can't see how to remove the acrylic diffuser panel to get at the lights. It won't bend enough to let me get it out of the frame.
