Question Installing a ceiling Fan

I am trying to install a ceiling fan and I have three wires coming out of the box (red, black and white). I am not sure which to hook up. Also, I am not sure where to attach the green pigtail ground wire that extends from the fan. Thanks

The red, black, and white wires coming out of the fan? If so, are you going to control the light and fan seperately from a wall switch or just frome the fan pull cords?

weebee, I think he means that the red, black and white are coming out of the ceiling.

Answer these questions and the rest will be easy. If you answer by number, you can make sure you get them all.

Is there exactly one red, one black and one white wire in the ceiling box? No more, no less? No bare wires? No additional red, white or black wires? No wire nuts connecting anything? Even if you poke around in the back of the box?
The wall switch that controls this -- is it just one switch, or are there two switches side by side in one box, neither of which control anything else? If just one switch in the box, does the lever say "on" and "off", or is it blank?
Is the box in the ceiling metal or plastic? If metal, do you know if it is rated to support the weight of a fan?
In what city do you live?
In what year was your house built?
What wires are coming out of your fan? A Hunter fan typically has one black, one blue, one white and one green. A Hampton Bay typically has one black, one black with a white stripe, one white, and one green. What do you have?
What brand is the fan?
What was mounted in this spot on the ceiling before.
