Evaporative Cooler Thermostat

I recently purchased a Dial (brand) "Cooler Controller." It is a digital thermostat for my evaporative cooler. I have been using a manual rotary 6 position wall switch to control the cooler. The installation instructions for the digital thermostat explain to me how the four wires that currently are wired to the rotary switch translate to the digital thermostat. However, the new digital thermostat has two additional wires coming out of it. One of the extra wires is a ground wire and I know what to do with it. The other extra wire is a black Power wire. So I've figured that I need to wire the black Power wire into the outlet below the existing switch where the Evaporative Cooler is also wired for power.

If this sounds OK so far, here is my question: The black power wire coming out of the thermostat is 16AWG. It is not longer enough to reach to the outlet so I need to wire some wire between the outlet and the thermostat. What gauge wire should I use to extend the power into the outlet?
