Unhappy Pull off/on lighting units

There are pull off/on lighting units on all three bedroom closets in my house. I would like to convert these into an on/off switch unit using a 14 gauge wire encased in a wiremold to be attached to the wall. Is there anything special I should know in order to do this? Like which of the two wire ( hot/neutral) should I connect the switch?

There are rules about the type of lights that may be installed in closets also. Something about top shelf height. A box could fall against an incandescent lamp and start a fire. Flo's are best in there.

Late but never meant to be rude. Thanks sberry and ron for the information. Have not done it yet but I have tucked the information in my file for future reference. Still settling in my new (old) house and finding a lot that still has to be done. This forum is terrific! Thanks again.
