Question

I want to install a small ceiling fan on my tongue & groove wood ceiling. Upon removing the original fixture, I found wires sticking through the wood and no outlet box. This house was built in 1961. My fan installation directions tell me to put in an outlet box that is "acceptable for ceiling fans." I found a small, circular metal outlet device that indicates use for my purpose. I just wonder if it is safe to screw this box to my wood ceiling as opposed to cutting a hole in the ceiling to afix a box to the joist (wherever that is). The device indicates it is suitable for drywall and fans up to 35 pounds, which is what my fan directions indicate too. Any words of wisdom and experience appreciated.

I'd fix the box to a ceiling joist or two somehow.
