hello camm,
ok here is what u need to have and do.
1- old work switch box or cut in box with box supports.
enough romex to run from switch to light;#12-2 if on a 20 amp circuit, 14-2 if on a 15 amp circuit.
1- singel pole switch
1- singel gang switch plate
and of corse your light.
now what u need to do is as follows
1. trace box on wall at hight desired
2. cut out traceing just slightly larger
3. cut a small piece of dry wall from wall and celling
4. cut a knotch in the top plate
5. turn off circuit
6. remove existuing light
7. fish romex between switch box and light
8. install romex in switch box and install
9. connect white and black to switch and bare to green screw if present
10. install switch and cover
11. connect the white going to switch to black in light box
12. connec the black comeing from switch to black of light
13. connect remaining white to light white
14. connect bare to green wire of light
15. install light.
19. turn circit back on
oops forgot to tell u how to get your wire to light if celling joists run threw your path. if u incounter this problem all u need to do is cut small sections of drywall out and knotch the celling joists and run wire threw the knotches. 1 other point to mention u will need to cover the knotches with a nail plate(piece of metal aprox 1/16" thick). if u have axcess to the attic its easer to do u do every thing the same except u omit #3 and 4 and drill the plate over the wall in attic and fish your wire threw hole to light box. if there r other wires in this celling box the whites will connect to the same white as the light and blacks will attach to same black as the white going to switch.(white going to switch is bringing power to the switch and black is returing it to light switched.)
