Question

am trying to install a new light fixture...was expecting to see a white, a black, and a ground (green or pink?) wire protruding from the ceiling upon removing the old fixture...but instead see 3 black wires, 2 of them are intertwined--is there any way to tell how to connect these to the black, white, and ground wires from my new fixture? Thanks in advance.

There is a gizmo you can use to identify the "hot" wire. I do not know the exact name of it but you can find this tester in hardware stores and consists of a neon light and two leads (or sometimes it is embedded in a screwdriver): You have to touch the wires with the blade (screwdriver type) and the top of the handle with your fingers. The neon should come on when you are touching the hot (the switch to the light fixture ought to be ON).

As for the neutral and ground is a guess game:
1.- hot and neutral twisted, ground alone. Or...
2.- ground and neutral twisted, hot alone

Based on your findings, take an option.

Good Luck!
