ceiling fan
#1

We are new homeowners and we are installing the first of 5 fans in our house. The house came with J boxes already in the ceiling, connecting to a switch on the wall. The fan has three wires (blue, black and white) the J box also has three wires (black, white and red). The instructions that came with the fan said to connect the black wire to the black wire, the white wire to the white wire and the blue wire to the blue wire. It said that if you have different color wires out of the ceiling to call an electrician. I was hoping someone could help me. Is it ok to connect the white to white, black to black and then the red to blue? I want the switch on the wall to just turn on the fan, and use the pull down cord to turn on the light. Please let me know if you think this is posssible. Thanks!

You will need to remove the switch and look to see what wires go where in there. There should be a wire that attaches to one side of the switch from the three wire cable that runs from the fan. That is the wire that you will need to hook the fan and the other wire (not White) should hook to your light kit. The blue in the fan is usually the light kit and the black is for the fan.
Sometimes the electrician will run a 3 wire to the fan box and not connect one of those wires. IE the red, if that's the case then you will need to connect the wire that is not connected to a hot feed in that box. Keep in mind that there has to be a feed to the switch so that's where you can get the power.
Usually in a switch box for a fan you will have a 3 wire that comes from the fan and then a two wire that feeds the switch. The white wires should already be connected leaving you to only have to figure out two the black and the red.
Hope this helps. If you have something different in that switch box post back with what you have and I am sure someone will be able to help you.
Good luck and Congratulations on your new home!
