Infrared/Laser thermometers?

I was wondering if anyone has ever used one of these and if they really work. Supposedly you can just point the thing at whatever and it will take the temperature via laser or something. I'm skeptical, so I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who's used one.

I'm looking to use one to measure my pool water temp. My constantly swimming dog has managed to demolish every pool thermometer I've bought, so I'm hopin to outfox him this time! Thanks!

Interesting idea. They do work; I know lots of people in the automotive industry that use them.

As far as working to take pool temp.....hmmmmmmmm.

Can't you dangle a thermometer in your skimmer where the dog can't get it?

No can do on the skimmer. I have a contraption in there that the hayward vacuum connects into, and let's you adjust the amount of skimming suction and vacuum suction and there just isn't enough water depth to put a thermometer.

Although maybe I could put it under that in the basket...

Thanks for the info., it's good to know that at least they work on regular surfaces.

I have one I use at work and I love it. I end up using it for all sorts of things. The reflection on the pool might cause it to be a few degrees off, it will be more accurate if you shoot it straight down at the bottom of the pool.

Never thought of this, but will it read a body temperature, W-G?

I'm not sure if the ones you buy in a hardware store will, but I know that they have medical ones that do. I think you shoot the laser in the ear to get the temp.

It would mesure you skin temp, but to get a body temp you would have to do it in the mouth or ear.
