Leica NA20 Auto-level

Does anyone know what the little lever on the side of this instrument is for? This is like a builder's dumpy level only is supposed to be auto-leveling (once you get it pretty close).

I found a PDF brochure for a NA2 but not an NA20.

Here is a link with some Wild/leica info and an online source to purchase old manuals.

Thanks. I'd found that web site but couldn't find any help there. On the underneath side of the case lid, I found a tag where the instrument had been work on or calibrated. It had the name and (more importantly) an 800 number of a level and transit company in Florida. The technician there explained that the lever "flips the compensator" so you can watch it settle. That way you know it's working and is not stuck.
