Dave:

How you set up your shop is a very personal thing. This would depend entirely what you want to do in there.

One idea I am going to incorporate into a 28 x 40 shop I am planning is to make a room the entire width of the shop for storage. It would be about eight feet deep and would allow me to store tools and supplies I don't use all the time as well as a place to put a furnace, air compressor, shop vac, etc.
This would keep clutter in the shop to a minimum.

The term shop layout will locate 1.2 million hits on Google!

First thing I would do is raise the ceiling height to 9 or 10'......I had one for years with 8' ceilings and everytime I tried to move a sheet of plywood around on end, or swing about any kind of board around, I'd knock a light out.......Finally got tired of THAT crap and my new shop has a near 14' ceiling......with a 10' rollup door.....no trouble pulling any vehicle I own, like tractor with roll bar, or truck with ladder rack, in that door.

WIth a 9' ceiling, you can put 8' high doors in and a full size van just about won't go in a standard 7' door.
