Sounds like you are asking too different questions. There is a tracking knob, turn it and the belt moves on or off. It is used to make the belt run true and not want to go to one side or the other.

Most belt sanders have no tension adjustment, it is automatically done by the handle and release mechanism you use to release belt to change it.

Think you just need to turn the tracking knob one way or the other.

Just to add a little more information to answer your question, you didn't mention the age of the sander.

Therefore, assuming it's several years old, any wear on anyone of the pulley wheel bearings can also cause the problem you mentioned.

Remove those and check for wear, damage or out of roundness on the brass or bronze pressed in bushings. Also the stems where they are installed on.

Any pulley running, even at a slight angle, will cause the problem you have. I have had this same problem on my belt sanders.

Repair or replace those damaged or worn out bushings, bearings or even the pulley or pulleys and the problem will be corrected.
