Can a Mortiser be used as a Drill Press?

I am thinking about buying one of those $200 bench top mortisers. I know they make contraptions to attach to a drill press that will perform the same function, but I've heard they are fussy and a hassle to use. I don't actually own a drill press yet either, but I think I will get much more use out of the mortiser. However, having never actually used a mortiser, I am wondering If it would be possible to use the mortise machine as a drill press (in wood) on those very rare occaisions when I need to do controlled perfectly perpendicular holes.

I would guess you could. I would wonder about variable speeds as needed for bits, adjustability of the chuck to fit bits.

Perhaps someone will come along who has gone this route before.

I've got Delta's mortiser, and a table top drill press.

The mortiser won't accept any of my standard Forstner bits.
