Stud detectors

Can someone recommend a stud detector or tell me what features I should look for? I live in a 40 year old "fireproof" building in New York with plaster walls with wire mesh. I found some studs 14 inches apart with my magnet, but they're not spaced as expected in some areas, maybe do to the inaccuracy of my use of the magnet as a stud detector. I think I should try a real stud detector.

Zircon makes a good quality stud sensor with deep scan mode, that you will need with the plaster walls. These can be purchased at the big box stores or hardware stores.

Thanks, I'll look for one of those. Hmm... I think I'll try my magnet technique on the other side of the wall first. Maybe the studs are closer to that side.

With the magnet, you aren't detecting studs, only nailheads, which should be in the studs, but can be a foot apart vertically, and you may go crazy finding one.
