I have a PLS180 with detector. Works fine with the detector. Without it, it's invisible in bright sunlight.

Agree with Brant, you need the detector. Even the glasses that come with the level are useless in bright sunlight. I use a self leveling rotating with detector, and it is invaluable!!! My detector, as most probably will, has a bracket to attach to the back of it. It will clamp around a 3 1/4" board so you can set the initial height of your highest or lowest point and gauge the remainder by it. Don't ask why it won't fit a 1x4, as it just doesn't. You have to trim it.

PLS = Pacific Laser Systems. I think the PLS5 is the next step up from mine.
