Problems with Stanley Stud Finder

I'm having trouble with my Stanley Stud Finder (Intellilasor 77-260). New battery, but when I put it on the wall and push the button instead of beeping and then waiting to find a stud, it shows the "edge" display continually - where I KNOW there is no stud. Anyone know of a way to get it to work correctly? Already put 3 holes in the drywall without hitting a stud....

Is this your manual? If so, follow its directions. It sounds like you are not calibrating it correctly. Is it really drywall, or is it plaster? Sometimes plaster is too dense to get a decent reading.

Thanks, X - yes its drywall. Pretty sure I calibrated it according to the manual. The battery is fresh out of the pack but I suppose it may be bad - not sure how a low battery effects the operation. Using it in the garage so I'm wondering if the insulation is kraft-faced - but again, not sure how that may effect things. Ended up using the ole reliable knuckle technique.
