Black & Decker cordless drill VP7201 - charger problem

I have a small B&D cordless drill VP7201. It has two battery cells/packs ... each one 3.6v. The power supply to the battery cradle expired and I replaced it with another similar unit. Only one battery pack would charge. I investigated and found that power was going to one side of the cradle only. The only apparent problem was a rectifier power diode IN4001. I replaced the diode and that side of the cradle began working again but the other side wouldn't. I replaced that diode as well ... burning one out in the process as it didn't work initially so I turned it around! WRONG! I replaced the diode again but still only the one side works and the diode gets quite hot. I've checked all the cables and they all seem good. Resoldered all joints. Still no luck with both battery packs. Does anyone have any ideas?

Welcome to the forums.

I've seen that problem happen with battery packs that have shorted cells in them.

Hmmm ... both battery packs charge up ok but only in one slot in the cradle, PJmax.
