Airmaster Tiger 8/40 compressor hard to start when cold

I have an Airmaster Tiger 8/40 compressor which I've owned from new & has had little use.
The problem I have is that when the temperature is low, it struggles to start. The motor turns quite slowly until the cutout operates. If I leave it for a couple of minutes & reset the cutout, it turns over a little faster before cutting out again. If I repeat this procedure 5 or 6 times, it will start as normal. I don't get this problem in summer.
I suspect the oil is too thick & it's causing a load on the motor.
I'm in the UK so low temperature to me means less than 10C or 50F.

Please can anyone advise what the problem might be?

This appears to be a direct drive, oil filled compressor.
This type is more susceptible to thick oil than a belt drive type.

I would suggest you change the oil to a thinner type.
For the short term there would be no problem trying 5W-30 regular automotive oil.
If this works then a 20 weight non-detergent oil would be the correct long term oil to use.

Assuming all other things equal, I would go with changing the oil as well. You didn't say how old it is, but doesn't really matter; oil is often let go too long in things like this anyway, so it's definitely not going to hurt anything. If you are running it on an extension cord, try plugging it directly to a receptacle as well. I am not familiar with your power, but it doesn't matter where you are on this earth, air compressors draw a lot of power to start, and the voltage drop that an extension cord brings to the mix is not good. And welcome, by the way. Let us know how it turns out, and whether for this or other projects, don't be a stranger.

..... and if you must use an extension cord make sure it's heavy enough!! preferably 12 gauge

Thanks for all the good advice.
I'll change the oil from 30W to 20W as it should provide less drag when the oil is cold. By non detergent, do you mean monograde?
BTW, I don't use an extension lead.

Regular multigrade 5W-30 oil wiĺl make for somewhat easier starting than
straight 20 weight.
If you were to try the multigrade and still have problems there could be other things wrong.
