Need advice on motor upgrades for bandsaw and belt grinder
I have picked up a couple DC Treadmill motors and I plan on using one of the motors to convert my 14" bandsaw to a variable speed metal-cutting bandsaw; while the other one will be used to drive a 2x72 belt grinder that I will be building later. One motor is 3HP (3k+ RPM), while the other is 1.75HP (4k+ RPM). I am having difficulty deciding which motor should be used for which project. I plan to use SCR controllers to adjust speed as opposed to pulleys. At the moment, I am leaning towards using the 1.75HP motor in the bandsaw, as I think I will want the extra power in the belt grinder. I would love to hear your recommendations, and the reasons you make your suggestions. THANKS!

I don't really have any ideas off the top of my head for motors for your tools.
But... the motors that are pulled from treadmills are worthless as they usually require 3 phase DC power. Some require +/- 100vdc 3 phase.
Check thoroughly into what your motors require to operate.

Peter: Thank you for your reply, but your presumptions are incorrect. Both of the motors in my possession are DC (Direct Current), so there is no "phase" to contend with except at the input of the motor controller. 3-Phase motors operate with AC (Alternating Current) and not DC. The more modern treadmills typically use DC motors these days because they are smaller than their AC induction motor equivalents, and provide better performance. These motors are FAR from "worthless"; they are in fact highly desirable; and they are easy to work with and control if you know what you are doing. My 3HP motor is rated for 130vdc peak performance, while the 1.75HP motor is rated at 90vdc peak performance. Due to the nature of how DC motors work and their power range tolerances, both of these motors will function just fine at 117vdc which is what the SCR motor controllers will have as an output. If you would like more information on using DC Treadmill motors, I would be happy to assist.
