Cordless drill battery

My Craftsman 19.2 volt cordless drill needs a new battery, as the existing unit won't hold a charge anymore.

My local Ace Hardware/Craftsman store has a Lithium-Ion replacement. "They're pretty much all switching to Lithium-Ion" says the guy on the phone. Well, okay, if that's the case...

The question is: Will my old "standard" battery charger work with the new battery?

 

Not usually unless it says it can.

You could post the charger model and we could check further.

Had a set of Rigid batteries go bad. Lifetime warrantee replaced the batteries with Lithium-Ion and a new charger. Old charger would not work.

 

I also have the 19.2 volt craftsman and it's my understanding while the nicad and lithium batteries are interchangeable - the charge is not. If you switch you'll need a different charger.

 

Might be time for a new tool, be it an impact driver or whatever. The way such tools are often packaged, it's as likely as not that you might find a tool that includes a battery or two and the charger for little more than the cost of just the charger.

PJMax, I'm familiar with Sears parts numbers. The charger isn't marked with any in that format. It only says "charger model 1425301".

(Being 10 years old, it probably isn't compatible with Lithium batteries.)

If it's a NiCad Battery it is possible to rebuild it. Are there screws holding the top of the case to the base? I have NiCads and have bought the cell packs and rebuilt them myself. It cost me half the price of a new battery. There are pros and cons to NiCad vs Li-Ion. Check them out to see if Li-Ion is the route to go for you. Also, if it is a NiCad there are companies that you can mail the battery to and they will do the rebuild.

 

I looked into that a number of years ago and found the price to be a good bit higher than buying a new battery although there are those that say a rebuilt battery is better than a new one.

 

The rebuilders seemed to use better cells. I had checked out a few rebuild sites but found sites that will sell the cells all welded together so all you have to do is remove the old pack and install the new pack. I bought a couple and they were half the price of a whole new battery. Mine are 12 volt...HD wanted $72 for a new battery. I bought the pre-welded replacement pack for $37 which included the shipping. I've got DeWalts and the battery packs are screwed together so it was an easy job. If you are into welding you can do it for even less $ by buying the individual cells and welding them together. There is also a company that sells cells with metal tabs which can be attached without welding......the reviews were questionable.
