Old Roe COMET 50ft Tape

I've got an old roll up tape measure that has recently become hard to wind up, especially when I get near the end. Is there a way to lubricate the tape or somehow else free it up? Its over 50yrs old and a family hand me down. Don't want to just discard it if I can fix it.

You may need to take it apart and clean it. Possibly it has sand or dirt in it.
I believe that's a metal case..... it may be rusted internally.
You can't lubricate the blade as dirt and dust will stick to it and then you'll really have a sticking problem.

Success! I figured the mechanism was all metal as old as it is and it was. There's a center pin with a drum around it that holds the end of the tape against the take up handle. A spring around the pin keeps everything in place with a E-clip on the other end with the spring under tension.

Took it all apart and the case was clean. I think the pin had slipped somehow and was jamming the drum somehow. Everything looked fine so I reassembled it, the worst part was securing the E-clip, that took a couple minutes. Tape works smooth again. Thanks for the advice.

Good job. Yes..... those e-rings can be quite a challenge. They make excellent missiles.
