Bostitch SX1838V stapler: trigger lock trouble

I have a Bostitch SX1838K stapler that I've owned for several years, but just used for the first time since it was new. Either its trigger lock has broken, or there's a trick to using it, or it's just very badly designed.

The instructions say "push the lockout control in" to disengage the lock. The control goes through the stapler's body so that when it's "in" on either side it's "out" on the other, but the picture shows it from the left side, so I think they mean push it in on the left. In fact this locks it. I have to push it the other way to disengage the lock -- but often that doesn't work, either. Then I may spend a minute or more getting everything lined up, working in an awkward position in a space where I can't apply the tool without blocking the light, needing three hands where there's room for only one person -- then I pull the trigger and nothing happens.

Is there some trick to using this thing that I don't understand?
