Can you Change Jigsaw Variable Speeds?
I have this 4 years old corded Jigsaw (Mastercraft, a Canadian Model), 4.5 Amps, 500-3000 SPM and works as it should. When I bought it I never paid attention to the VS range, all I wanted a VS which is nice to have.
Now I have some delicate cuts to do and I noticed that the 500 starting speed is quite high and it will not go down to anything less. Looking around I also noticed Jigsaw come in a variety of speeds from 0-3000, 300-3000 etc.
I wonder whats the point to have a VS when it starts at 300 or 500 SPM which is quite high. VS to me is from 0 to whatever the tool can handle (and that was my thinking when I bought it).
I didnt open it up to see whats inside but if I open it up, is it possible to change whats required and make it start at less than 500 SPM?

Id suggest just buying another tool specific for the need, I have lots of similar tools, each has it's specific talent, I cant imagine trying to tear one apart to alter it to do something it was not designed to do!

Not a big deal guys, I thought it would be something easy and common. In addition, with the lockdown here its not easy to go and buy another one which I intend to do as soon as we are “free again”
When I start my jigsaw at the lowest speed of 500 SPM that speed to me is the highest speed I would normally do for any cutting (actually its too high for my needs).. If I turn the dial to 3000 she goes so fast I think the tool will fall apart. Calling a tool “variable speed” is misleading because to my understanding “variable” means you start from 0 and not from a preset high speed.

Please note that a variac could possibly burn out an electric motor due to slowing the motor by low voltage.

Thanks Xsleeper, I was not planning to get a variac but I do have a router speed controller which my jigsaw didnt like (didnt run at all).
Lockdown, hopefully ends here Feb-08, and I have my eyes on a 3.5A, 0-3000SPM for CAD$60.00. I will make sure before I buy it that it runs 0-3000!
