Grease gun hose cleaning

I typically clean a grease gun hose with a bottle brush after use. Is there another way to do it?

Why not wipe it down with a rag with some brake cleaner on it?

That's fine for the outside. I use the brush on the inside.

I don't use my grease gun often, maybe 3-4 times a year. I've assumed the hose will clog as the base oil oxidizes over time. It could also cake and dry out. But I haven't left it alone because clogging the hose could ruin the grease gun. Am I just wasting time?

I use my grease gun maybe twice a year and I've never cleaned out the hose nor have I ever had a problem with it clogging. I do keep it in a sealed container to contain the mess; maybe that keeps it from drying out. IME, cleaning the hose is not necessary.

Thanks for the information. It seems clear that cleaning the hose interior isn't necessary. But this morning I tried a new technique. pouring some transmission fluid in the inverted grease gun head and pumping it through the hose. It cleaned the grease gun head and cleared the hose in less than one minute so I'll probably continue doing that, just in case.

If anything..... put a small plastic bag over the end to keep dirt out.

When automobiles had grease fittings, the recommended grease intervals was mileage, not time, so my guess was the grease manufacturers made a long shelf life product. I doubt the grease manufacturers have gone backwards . I have a grease gun I use maybe once every 2-3 years and never have cleaned it. By practice I throw away the first pump but it is just as pliable and greasy as when new.

many have the rubber covers you just slide over the end of the hose think you can buy those also if your really worried about it never had any issues just wiping off the exterior of the hose and storing till next time.

With all that being said, it sounds like some of you just put it away with the cartridge inside and leave it for next time. Is that correct?

Remove the hose, it all goes back in the box till spring time next year when all the lawn equipment gets it's pre season maintenance!
