Hello: Jeffeye

About the only successful method the homeowner can use to sharpen a lawnmower blade, is either a bench grinder or a belt sander.

I would suggest the belt sander method. Use a 150 or 100 grit belt. Face the blades cutting edge upwards into the rotating belt and follow the existing angle.

Many passes will be needed to cleanup the nicks, etc. However, once they are gone, make one or two more passes to finish the sharpening on each side.

Tip:
Do half the sharpening on each side until both sides are completed.

Next comes the hard part. The rotary blade will need to be balanced. There will be several methods to balance the blade mid point to locate the heavier end.

Once you find the heavier end, you'll have to grind off some of that side of the blades end. Do this over several times until it balances perfectly.

Failure to balance the blade at all or incorrectly done, the out of balance blade will cause the mower to vibrate. The vibration will cause the motor shaft to prematurely wear out the shaft seal and oil will soon begin to leak out.
