alarm without RJ31X phone jack

I have a DSC 1500 alarm which is not being monitored by an alarm company (the phone line to the alarm panel is currently not hooked up).

I'm thinking of having the alarm call my cell phone when the alarm gets triggered and I will see my home number on my caller id on my cell phone. I don't really need the alarm panel to "take-over" the phone line to call my cell phone so I'm wondering what if I don't use a RJ31X phone jack and just connect the phone line to the outgoing phone line on the alarm panel (i.e. just tap into the phone line, similarly to how phones are connected to a phone line).

That will work just fine. All the RJ jack is for is to allow the home owner with a "Quick Disconnect" in case the phones stop working, etc. It doesn't actually affect the performance of the phone line on either side. It's just a switch, per say.

To clarify, it does have other purposes, but is NOT necessary for operation. If you want to know more about the other functions of the RJ, hit reply.

Correction (not really)

I have been informed by one of our members (? - haven't seen any post, so not sure, maybe just a guest) that the RJ31X can be wired to allow for an alarm in the case of a phone tamper. As this if very true, and often done, it has absolutely nothing to do with this post, as hsam just wanted to know if he NEEDED an RJ or not.

I want to put out a special thanks to the very knowledgable (to the point of being annoying) member/guest who pointed this out to me. And, more so, took the time to send me a very informational e-mail. For if they had not done this, hsam may have made the BIIIG mistake of not putting an RJ jack on his system (which, btw, he never wanted to do in the first place.)

Again, Thank You, and I look forward to ALL your corrections in the future.

DO NOT E-MAIL ABOUT WHY SOMEONE SHOULD USE AN RJ, IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, SAY IT HERE OR DON'T SAY IT AT ALL.
