Possible Security Problems with the X-10

From time-to-time, the subject of the X-10 (x10) camera comes up and I'd like to enter the following into the record and of course, entertain any discussion on the topic;

I read an article last year in the New York Times that scared me away from using the x-10 for anything I'd call security. I went back and found the article in the archives, but of course it has been so long ago that they charge for web-accessed reprints. I, then discovered a shortened version that had been reprinted in the Seattle paper, but it had been edited to remove what I considered the scariest paragraph which is down towards the end of the piece. Then, I discovered a complete copy on what appears to be somebody's blog, so I am linking all three to this post.

The blog version is the complete article and I'm linking the shortened version in case someone finds comfort in things printed in a respectable paper and of course, I'm linking the original Times piece because they actually financed the publication.

Hmm, very interesting reading. Especially considering the fact that many of our frequenters use X-10. I'll copy it over to Home Automation also.

The theorizing about the possibility of substituting images doesn't really sound that difficult to me, especially if you combine it with the thread that was on this forum or possibly in "Home Automation" about the neighbors controlling the fellow's lights. If you put two and two together, oftentimes it will add up to four.

I'd be real interested to know whether or not they have taken steps to patch the hole and if they contacted current owners with a fix, if it exists. Of course being a voyeur, I'd also be interested in exactly what they bought from Radio Shack, but that's another story...

I remember reading the article and it's always stuck in my mind; I've seen the discussion of x-10 on this board and kept meaning to bring it up, but I guess it took a cold, boring day in the desert for me to try and construct a google good enough to find the complete text...

Peace, Love & Happiness;
