Question help Gate buzzer problem

Hi You

I've got this problem about 2 years now, in that my drive way gates need a buzzer in the house and back yard (large) that goes on when (gate/s) are opened by a vistor and buzzer goes off after a set amount of time (a few seconds or so), to warn us of vistors reasons being, 1. dog is very jumpy (as in let me jump in your arms, big dog), 2. (sexy??) wife sunbaths naked, 3. I work nights wife\kids alone.
I'm stuck with how to\what to do and use.
Reed switches?
Battery power, AC or solar?
Wiring diagram?
Timer to turn off alarm (555)?

Help what do I need and how do I do it
Between gate post and gate there is about 60mm
Between gates (in the middle where they meet) there is about 15mm
AC power is harder, concrete driveway and paths
In New Zealand, AC is 230v

Tryed to find info but can't find anything on line for this problem, need cheap ideas plus something that I can make myself (sense of doing something with my hands, do all repairs and building around my home but this has stumped me)

Thank You

Tony

I would go with a photobeam. Possibly with a wireless/radio link to the actual noisemaker/alarm. This stuff generally runs on 12vdc, so you could easily run it off of solar and battery, but since it's low voltage, hard wiring is no worse than running low voltage garden lights.

There are any number of ways to interconnect the rig to a regular burg alarm to do what you want. Some of it is hardware solutions, some is programming.
