interfacing PIR with a computer

Are there any ways to interface a PIR motion sensor with a PC?

PIR's typically use a Normally Closed (Form C) relay and a 12VDC power supply - so, yes, it would be possible.

Pratical? That's a totally different story.

Actually, come to think of it, it's done every day with DVR systems. They usually have an alarm input and often outputs too.

It all comes down to what you want to do with it and what hardware do you have to support it.

Good luck!

Dunno what is a Normally Closed relay. What kind of output does a PIR motion sensor usually have?

It's a relay whose contacts are closed unless energized.

Most motions are NC, a few of the better ones have Normal Closed and Normal Open options.

There are add in cards that will turn computer into a DVR type system, but they usually cost almost as much as simply buying a DVR.
