Is this illegal for Brinks to do?

I just brought a house, previous owner had a Brinks system installed, they disconnected the monitoring service but the system is still working, meaning the siren will go off and I have the 4 digit code they left me to disarm it if I need to. Well the only problem is, every night at about 1:30am in the morning the keypad starts beeping. I have to get out of bed run downstairs and hit the "Cancel" button to stop it from beeping. The lcd on the keypad says something about there is a problem please call the 1-800 Brinks number. Then the next night it will do it again at the same time, and night after night this has been happening. So I called Brinks and they said it will keep doing that until you activate their monitoring service. They said the keypad is showing that error because there is no phone line hooked up (I just use my cell phone, no land line), and because my monitoring service isn't activated with them. So the only option I had was to totally power down the system (which sucks because I really wanted to use just the siren for now). So anyhow, I talked to another guy that did security installations and he said that this is "illegal" for the Brinks keypad to beep like this every night. He said it's a form of harrassment to get you to hook up their monitoring service. So I have a couple questions..

1.) Is there a way to disable this beeping and still have the alarm system working like normal and have the siren go off on alarms without a phone line and without paying for monitoring service?

2.) Can I file a complaint against Brinks for having their keypads beep like this?

Thanks

1.) Probably not. They have a couple of models that can be reset, but most cant.

2.) Probably not. Their installation and agreement was with the prior owner of the residence.

I am not up on all the Brinks systems but I know how Brinks and ADT tend to work at times, They will be happy to charge you a service call charge to do any small thing to your system. So it seems that you could at some cost have them reprogram your system as a local account only. I don't know for sure but our company will remove all the account and dialing info for a customer.

Exactly, that can easily be taken care of with programing. Is it illegal for them to tell you what they did, most likely not, although highly unethical. I would call several local alarm companies, ie: those with addresses near you NOT large national companies and get a quote on a service charge. Tell them your story and you might get a good deal from a small local guy. Personally, if someone I know told me that story I would help them anyway I could for free and then call Brinks ant tell them. It *might* be that the particular person you talked to either didn't not know any better or it was a n00b salesman trying to get a sale and someone in managment needs to know.

Nope, when you have Brinks branded hardware, unless you have a local installer that happens to have their codebook and programming tool, you are essentially stuck. On most models, the monitoring information is hardcoded onto the eeprom, and on the couple that it's not, it's not really a DIY solution.

You have 2 choices, replace the keypads and control, or work with Brinks.
