How do I temporarily disable smoke detector?

The house I bought 6 years ago has an alarm system that includes a smoke detector in the basement. Any time welding is done in the basement the alarm goes off, even if it is not armed.

I have no user manual. It says the following on the control panel:

Vector/Vista System Part A of N3204V2 Rev. A 10/89

Is there any way to temporarily disable the smoke detector while the welding is being done?

Thanks in advance.

Linda

Linda,

The simple way to disable your smoke detector is to tape a plastic bag over it.
Use painter's masking tape and you will not be left with marks.

Just don't forget to remove the bag when finished welding.

You can try using the standard zone bypass command for your system, but often, smoke detector loops are defined as non-bypassable. If this is a typical Ademco system the sequence will be [code] + 6 + [2digit zone number].

I couldn't bypass the smoke detector so I taped a bag over it and that worked like a charm, thanks very much.

Bag or glove is the best. You do not want to disable it completely. This way, if there is a fire, the fire will just melt that bag or glove and alarm will still go off.
