No text prompts on 6128RF display during zone programming?
Ademco System
Vista-10SE
6128RF keypad
(Default Installer code 4-1-1-1 after reset)
3 Wireless xmtrs 5816 and 1 wireless 5890 motion detector
No hard-wired zones
No ADT service.
OK, I spent all day yesterday trying to learn about the system the previous house owners left me with. No manual, instructions, etc.
I'm trying to program 4 wireless zones, but the display doesn't give me any prompts. I start with the <installer code> + 8 + 0, then *56 and it starts taking input that looks like a zone programming logic, but there are no prompts of any kind - just the value on the top left of the display.
I have already done a reset (*97) so I'm starting from scratch.

I think I understand the most of the system well enough that I should be able to program it, but without the prompts, I feel blind.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Steve

NEVER MIND!
Looks like I owe many thanks go to MrRonFL.
I found this thread from MrRonFL helping someone else with an almost identical problem. (Thread ID 306764)
I think that thread should be in the FAQ section with a title like "Programming Ademco Zones without a 2 line alpha keypad" or something like that.
thanks so much,
Steve

I don't encourage the practice of zone programming without the proper keypad on ademco panels, because the average DIY has a really tough time keeping track of where they are. There are too many variables, and for doing more than a single device, it's really tough to pull it off.
If you have a clear understanding of Ademco programming syntex, go for it, just realize that you have no way to check yourself.

I was able to program 3 5816s and a 5890 into the system.
Thanks to everyone who is generous with their knowledge!
Hope my success helps others in the future.
It *is* possible to program zones into a Vista-10se with a 6128RF keypad.
I had to reset the system (with *97) a few times, but it worked just as MrRonFL said it would.
So, to add a basic 5816 device on zone 10: Where [key num] is a key press:
System is on
[4][1][1][1] [8][0] (enter setup) (4111 is default code, yours may be diff)
[*][2][2] [2] (sets 6128RF for 5800 devices)
[*][5][6] (start zone programming)
[1] (answers "Yes" to "Set To Confirm?")
[1][0][*] (zone number 10)[*] (OK to change current settings)
[0][3][*] (Zone type 3, Perimeter)
[0][1] [0][0][*] (Response code of 10 (can be anything?))
[3][*] (Device input type - supervised RF)
Open Door (or window, etc) wait ~4 seconds Close Door (etc)
(2 beeps mean OK, keypad heard device)[*][*]
Open Door (or window, etc) wait ~4 seconds Close Door (etc)
(3 beeps mean OK, device now in system)[*][*]
[0][0] No more zones[*] Exit Zone Programming
Re-enter programming mode (back up to *56) to do another, or[*][9][9] Exit setup mode
Done!
