Looking for transformer

I'm in a 1963 house and the doorbell is out. I have a new door bel and hooked it up but it either doesn't work at all or it works continuously. I measured the voltage accross the transformer at the wall and it reads 32 VAC. I have looked in all the places I can think of and cannot find the transformer itelf. Is there any way of finding a transformer without tearing out the walls as I chase the wires? I figure the transformer is either bad or the tap of the transformer was the wrong one in the first place. In the old ringer there was a resistor inseries with the power to the old ringer.

Thanks,
Bob

Sometimes those doorbell transformers are tucked into a junction box behind the door bell sounder, sometimes they are right by (sometimes inside of) the breaker panel. sometimes they are just inside the attic access. Sadly, there is no standard location.
