smoke detector troubleshooting

Smoke detectors went off 3 times in the middle of the night, for aprox. 7-10 seconds each time. They are all wired together so I didn't know which one was at fault. All have brand new batteries. My wife thought it was the one in the upstairs hall, so I disconnected it and no more problems last night. Units are BKR model# 41220B. I hear that dust can cause this to happen. visually the unit looks clean. Can I dust it off or should it be replaced? Units are 8 years old, from original builder construction.

You can try giving them a good cleaning with some canned air (8 years, and probably haven't been cleaned since installation).

They are about 2 years short of the recommended replacement lifetime for this type of smoke alarm, so it might be worth your while to get a full new set.
