finding monitoring companies

Thanks for all these useful points.

Can anyone share how to find a local monitoring company for those who want to do the install themselves?

Also, I'm interested in having a cellular system (we don't have a land-line). Any ideas on if this is less common than land-line monitoring? ADT tells me the cell system doesn't use existing cell towers and that they have their own networks, is this accurate?

The thread you were commenting on (http://forum.doityourself.com/electr...adt-worth.html) wrapped up about 5 years ago.

Most alarm cell dialers use their own specific networks, which are effectively a sub-channel of the normal GSM network. They do use the same _towers_ but it's not a normal cell phone signal. Such dialers have to be set up by a dealer, in general.

There are services like alarm.com, that deal directly with the DIY community.

Take a look at the systems offered by Alarm.com through FrontPoint Security Solutions. They use Simon XT consoles, wireless detectors, and GSM (cell-based) communication to the central station.
