ADT BHS-400B Control Panel issue

I recently purchased a home that has the BHS-400B Control Panel with the premium key pad. I want this alarm system to act as a stand alone system without monitoring. When I moved in the system worked fine, I guess until the new owners transferred their servoce on cancelled the contract. The "On" buttom is no longer lit, and a message appears on the kep pad that states "Not Ready... Call 1-800-........" I called ADT about this error, but the young lady that answered the phone said I didn't have an account (which I know), and wasn't sure how to correct the system without scheduling a service call. Can anyone help me figure this out?

Your panel has been altered by the downloader software. There is no way to fix this without service from Broadview/ADT. You can however, replace the control panel and keypad with a non-proprietary system. You will want an alphanumeric to program the new system.

Can you suggest a system? Is there a system I can get from the local Lowe's?
