via-30pse & 6160 keypad - low battery message

I replaced my keypad with a 6160, connected to my ademco via30-pse panel. it is plugged into an outlet, but no backup battery. while trying to program the keypad, the display & backlight are on, but as soon as i exit programming mode i get a low battery message and the backlight turns off. Why is this happening? I plan on replacing the backup battery at some point but didn't think it would be necessary the panel is still getting power from the outlet.

There is no way to disable the requirement for a working backup battery. The system actually requires the battery to handle the power surge that happens when the siren first kicks on, as well as being the general power backup.
