Home Security
#1
We are about to move into a new home that has a security system installed. The current owners have discontinued the service and have told us that they were very unhappy with the service. My question is, can the system that is installed be used by another company or are they dedicated systems that will only work with the company that installed it?
Thanks,
Dan

control panel
It all depends on the model of alarm panel you have. Most installers enter an "Installer code" into the system which allows them to access the programming feature of the alarm control. Without this code, you will probably not be able to reprogram the control with new Central Station information. Some alarm controls have a reboot procedure which can restore the control to it's factory defaults. This would allow someone to reprogram. Of course the entire control would have to be programmed, including zone information, but it is better than replacing the panel. If you can't access the programming mode, an installer can replace only the circuit board, and you can keep using the same keypads, sensors, and contacts.
I hope this helps. If you can tell me the model of alarm panel, I might be able to give you more info.
