DSC 832 programming question

The alarm was fine until I tried to add another zone. I hooked up the door sensor from my shop to the system but it all went downhill when I tried to incorporate the sensor in the available zone 5. I apparently turned things off and misconfigured the zones and now my zone 1 for my house is not recognized.

I had it doing everything from arming itself just by opening the doors in the house on zone 1, until now I have zone 1 jacked up and it will not arm itself when I enter the code to arm it. Now it just counts down indefinitely but never really stops counting. Zone 1 still shows "open" when I open the door, but I cannot arm it. I DID remove the new shop door switch from the zone 5 but zone 1 is still erratic and I cannot arm it. HELP.

If your zone 1 is hardwired then make sure your attributes are correct. Consult the manual for the correct selections for each zone type but attribute 8 should be off. This is section 101 for zone 1. Check your zone type first entry in section 001 for zone 1.

Reprogram zone 5. Is this wireless?? Shouldnt have any effect on zone 1.

Thanks for the reply. All of my zones are hardwired. Zone 1 consists of entry doors. This is what I see loaded for zones 1-4, after I tried to incorporate the zone 5, which I eventually removed from the panel strip after the problems started.
Zone 1 Enter *8 (code) 101 then I see 4, 5. ( I have changed these settings to almost everything being turned on, to changing them to various combinations. Now it will not even sound the chime when I have it selected on the key pad.
Zone 2 Enter *8 (code) 102 then I see 12 456 turned on. I don't believe I accidentally changed anything here.
Zone 3 Enter *8 (code) 103 then I see 5 turned on. Don't think I changed anything here.
Zone 4 *8 (code) 104 see a 5.

I thought maybe when I attempted to activate zone 5, maybe I entered something in an area that caused this. Still lost. Thanks is advance...

Oookay...Under normal circumstances, other than turning on/off the wireless attribute, you don't have to mess with the zone attributes in 1xx. Those are automatically set by the zone definitions in locations like 001. To fix zone 1, look at the chart on the programming work sheet page 7: http://cms.dsc.com/download2.php?t=1&id=13805

The correct settings for a delay zone in 101 should be 1234 6 turned on.

If you have faulty wiring/devices on a hardwired zone, and you are trying to eliminate the zone, the simple solution is to remove the wires from the zone input and replace them with either a 5.6 k resistor, or a simple wire jumper (if your system was configured for NC zones with no resistor)

What keystrokes did you try to enter to try to add this zone 5? To add/change a hard wired zone, the correct keystrokes should be *8 [installer code] 001 xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx (with xx being the 2-digit zone type for zones 1-8, in order).

Thanks for your valuable advice. I entered the zone definitions as you suggested. 001 is now configured as: Zone 1=01 (door contacts) Zone 2=05 (motion sense) Zone 3= 05, Zone 4= 05, zones 5-8=00. (I took my new potential zone 5 out of the system for now.
I was unable to arm it in "Away" mode until I entered the codes as you suggested. The problem now is that it will not dial out. This had worked fine and called my cell as it should whenever I was working on it yesterday. I checked section 380 and 1 and 4 were turned on. Can you lend some advice here to get my dialer back functional? Thanks in advance for any help you can lend.

Are you giving it sufficient time to dial out? There's generally a 30 second dialer delay before it even starts to dial. If you made no changes to report codes or dialer configuration; then that should work as it has previously.

I just tripped the alarm and waited about 35 seconds but it never dialed out. The last two days whenever I was struggling with the previous issues, and thus causing alarms, it called my cell within seconds each time. I don't know why it will not dial now that I correctly entered the 001 assignments as suggested. Is there anything I should look at other than having section 380 option 1 on as I found it and the option 4 on as
I found it also?

Thanks again for any assistance you can lend on this.

Do you have report codes programmed in location 320?

Given the bit of fumbling around you were earlier doing; it's hard to tell what you might or might not have inadvertently altered in the programming.

I just checked 320 and 1234 is displayed. I don't know if it is relevant or not, but I am using a Visonic (I think) dialer that is driven from the +/- Bell terminals in the panel.

But yes, you are right, I may have changed something to cause the dial error. But the only thing that I changed today is to add the 001 zones as I mentioned earlier this afternoon.

Thanks for your help.

Problem solved. Apparently whenever I looked in the panel this afternoon to refresh myself how I had wired the three entrance doors in zone 1, i broke a wire from the terminal strip to the dialer. Whew. It appears that all is fine again.

I really do appreciate your help with this. I put this system in myself in 2007 but have forgotten a few things and the supplier and tech support are out of business. Thanks again.

Glad you got it sorted out. Knowing that you were using an external dialer would have eliminated a little "rabbit hole" chasing...
