Sanity check on hardwired smoke alarm

This will keep me up at night, so figured I would check with a pro...

I installed a new FirstAlert alarm today...black to black, white to white, so
I should be good (I think). What worries me is the old alarm that I unhooked
I thought the old white wire was hanging loose and the old black wire was
to the house white ones...maybe wire came loose when I pulled old one
off, maybe I was just seeing things...house was built in 86, so should I
call in electrician or was I just seeing things? The green light is on and it
chirped until i put in a backup battery, so seems to be working...

Oh, and for the record, I'm always nervous around elec, which is why 99
percent of the time I hire an expert...smoke alarm i thought would be easy...

You are installing a single, battery/electric smoke detector...... not one that communicates with other hard wired smoke detectors..... correct ?

In that instance.... there would only be two wires..... white and black and you would match the detector to the same colored wires. If the green light is on then that is a confirmation of AC power.
