Question about Simon XTi

Hi everyone. I am totally new to the home security systems and I hope I can get help here. May be I am too new to this, I cannot research effectively and I hope the questions are not too obvious and bothering.

I have just bought a house and the last owner has left his security systems for me (Some sensors and the Interlogix Simon XTi control panel). And here comes my first question: Is it a bad idea to use that security system?

I have seen him, the owner, using his cellphone to control the security system. But no matter how I try/search, I cannot find an app that work. Am I missing/misunderstanding anything about the security system?

I want to set up my own self-monitoring security system, but I want to keep the monthly fee low ($0 will be the best). What should I do/search?

Thank you for your help.

Much of the enhanced functions, like smartphone access, are based on the subscription service doing the monitoring. Did the previous owner provide you with all of the contact and access information they were using for the alarm system?

Thank you for your reply.

The previous owner did not give me anything (no contact and access information). The only thing he gave me was the master code, which can be used to enter the "programming".

Here's the user manual: http://johnsbrotherssecurity.com/ima...ser-manual.pdf

http://static.interlogix.com/library...ll%20Guide.pdf

The original owner may have been using the offsite phone access.

For the "offsite phone access", do you mean the service/app from company like alarm.com?
I remember when the previous owner showed me his phone, the interface looked like the one from alarm.com (orange, white combination).

Is that the only way I can control the security system by my cellphone?
If yes, is there any company you recommend or I should avoid?

The system has a built in touchtone phone access mechanism.

From your description, they were using something along the lines of an Alarm.com account. That, you would have to set up an account for yourself, those generally don't get transferred.

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for the late response.

In short, it will not be a problem using that security system.
And, in order to use my cellphone to control the security system, the monthly fee will be a must and there is no way to avoid that.
Am I correct?

That's it in a nutshell. To get the pretty smartphone interface, you have to use a paid service.
