Use ADT Simon XT or buy new equipment?

I recently purchased a new home with an ADT Simon XT (no current contract). The system is currently disconnected and the previous owner had unknown issues with it. 14 entry sensors, 3 glass break sensors and 1 motion detector. I would like a system, probably including wireless smoke/fire sensors but not connected to a service.
Is it practical to reprogram it and add new sensors as needed? Or purchase a new controller that would be compatible with the existing sensors? Or just go with an entire new system?
Any/all suggestions appreciated!

If you don't have the current installer codes, Simon XT can be pretty difficult to get into to reconfigure for a new owner. If the standard ADT installer code will get you into programming, then it can be done. Otherwise, it might be less headache to get a new Simon base unit and re-use the existing transmitters.

If, you want to upgrade, the same transmitters are also compatible with Concord and Networx wireless receivers.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like a good game plan. Sorry for the delay in responding - periodically off the grid.
