Adding a smoke detector to an FA1220CV system
I own an older FA1220CV system in my house. It currently has 5 Ademco type wireless smoke detectors. I recently replaced a defective one with a new one and simply move the PINS to the same house setting and that specific detector setting and it was recognized instantly and works fine.
In the process of locating and buying a replacement for the old Ademco smoke detector I was able to buy a second one as well. If I would like to add this extra smoke detector to my system as a new zone does anyone know how I would go about doing it? The manual is pretty useless in this regard and I can't find information on my specific system online. My service company won't tell me how to do it without a service call.
According to the manual that comes with the smoke detector I should be able to adjust 8 different PIN settings to use with 8 different detectors numbered 48-55. Currently in my system only five detectors are being utilized numbers 51-55 so numbers 48-50 should still be available to assign.
Any help as to how I would program this new detector for a new zone into my system would be appreciated

I _think_ this model is the equivalent of a Vista 4140XMP.
See if this manual looks like a match for your system:

Basically, you will need to enable and configure the new device address into the system.

There are certain similarities but it's not clear how I get into my system to Program. I set the device PINS on the smoke detector but it wasn't automatically recognized. DO I need some kind of installer code? or should I be able to do it as an end user?

Yes, you need the installer code. The default for this model is 4140, but has undoubtedly been changed. There is a way to power cycle the system to get into programming. Look at the programming instructions beginning on page 22 of the manual.
Once you get in with the power cycle technique, for this model press #00 and it will read back the current installer code, one digit at a time (ignore leading zeros).
This was originally a commercial grade system, so the instructions aren't the most user friendly. Look over the programming instructions, and let us know what parts you get stuck on.

Thank you, I will try & let you know, however the systems seem to have differences. Do you have any similar instructions for the FA1220CV system? If I sent the specific model/types of keypads I have help you lead me to the specific instructions or does it not make any difference?

First Alert is the semi-proprietary version of the Ademco/Honeywell Vista panels, and the 1220CV is an obscure model even of that.
Only FA dealers have access to that part of the Honeywell database (I'm not one).
If you websearch using the phrase "FA1220CV installation manual" you may find a PDF archive with it available for a nominal fee, but otherwise the only thing I could find on a quick websearch was the user manual.
