Question Wiring low voltage AC with a battery standby

How simple would it be to wire up a battery standby for low voltage ac/dc? What would I need? I would like to be able to wire a simple scenario where I have a circuit normally powering a unit with lower voltage ac/dc switch to a battery if the power fails. I am guessing it involves normally open contacts that close when power is off to complete the alternate circuit but am not sure of the components or the sequence or order. Thanks

Why not just pick up a cheap UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)?
These can be had at hardware stores for <$75 depending on your needs.

Altronix.com this is a company that manufactures lowvoltage power supllies that can accomodate battery back using a stand sealed cell battery. depending on current and back up time needed you should be able to do this for less than fifty dollars.

Contact a local security dealer. They can provide you with a 12v dc battery 7 amp $10, Small transformer 40/12v $8, and an adjustable out put 1 - 12 volt back-up switching relay $10.
